Charlestown Community Primary School is proud to take Equality very seriously.  We encourage our children to stand tall and be proud of who they are, their heritage and beliefs and we want everyone in our community to have the opportunity to thrive without prejudice. Sometimes that means working gently with children who may have been influenced by adult thoughts outside of our safe school environment, but our commitment to this is unwavering.

Equality is about ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of their lives and talents. Equality recognises that historically certain groups of people with protected characteristics such as race, disability, sex and sexual orientation have experienced discrimination. We are committed to ensuring that our staff are expertly trained in this area and our children therefore all receive the best possible education and support without bias or discrimination.

Protected characteristics:

It is against the law to discriminate against someone because of:

As part of our curriculum and nurture programme, we ensure that children can talk freely about who they are and we enable children to feel safe about being unique.

Our Equality policy (below) is a developing work in progress and is not just a piece of paper, it is a well thought through document that shares our beliefs and commitments towards Equality. It is currently being reviewed by staff, children, governors and parents to ensure we get it right. It challenges stereotypes and works towards an equal society of fairness and opportunity for all. We have carefully considered and analysed the impact of our policy  and the possible implications for pupils with protected characteristics. This is part of our commitment to meet the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) requirement to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations.
