At Charlestown Community Primary School, we believe that all children are readers irrespective of their level of ability. We think that reading should be an enjoyable, rewarding activity for all.
We also recognise that reading is a complex skill which develops gradually alongside spoken and written language of young children. We therefore teach reading using a range of strategies and approaches. We adopted Read,Write Inc in April 2021 and can already see our chidlren are thriving using this new, consistent approach.
Reading is a partnership and we value all parental support in this process. However, we also know that some adults struggle with reading themselves and that supporting their child is challenging. We therefore ensure that children who do not have the support at home are heard read in school regularly.
It is very important that children read at home where possible to an adult, and that they are sent to school with their reading book and diary each day. The reading diaries are a great way for parents to communicate with teachers about how each child is reading at home. The reading book that a child is sent home with is aimed at a level which they can read independently to an adult and therefore develop an enjoyment of reading.
Listening to your child read:
There is a real difference with hearing your child read and listening to your child read. It gets harder as they get older! Knowing what questions to ask, how to advise and what you should be looking for in terms of developing their reading is quite a skill - take a look below at how you can help.

Reading schemes
We use Read, Write, Inc and Accelerated Reader to develop our children's reading skills.
Reading interventions
We use Lexia as an intervention tool for our lowest attaining 20% of readers and for those in receipt of Pupil Premium that are underachieving in Key Stage 2. Read more about why we use Lexia here:

Lexia Core5 Reading is an adaptive blended learning program that accelerates the development of literacy skills for children of all abilities, helping them make that critical shift from learning to read to reading to learn.
At Charlestown, we believe it is import to ensure that all of our children are confident and able readers before they continue their learning journey into High School. This program not only engages the children in their reading but also adapts to suit their reading level by supporting them to develop their word reading and comprehension.
